Medicare

The four parts, the two paths, and the calendar.

Most of the confusion is not the coverage. It is which enrollment window you are in, and whether Advantage or a supplement matches how you actually use care.

The four parts

Part A

Hospital

Inpatient hospital, skilled nursing after a qualifying stay, hospice, and some home health. Most people get Part A premium-free if they paid Medicare taxes long enough.

Part B

Medical

Doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, durable medical equipment. This is the piece people delay — or enroll in late — by accident.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

Private plans that replace Original Medicare for covered services, usually with a network, extras, and a drug benefit bundled in.

Part D

Prescription drugs

Stand-alone if you keep Original Medicare, or included in most Advantage plans. Formularies change every year. So should the check.

Simplified for orientation. Your county, doctors, and drugs change the answer. We do not offer every plan available in your area.

Enrollment windows

Missing a window is how people pick up late-enrollment penalties or get stuck with medical underwriting. These are the ones we watch.

  1. Seven months around your 65th birthday

    Initial Enrollment Period

Three months before, the birthday month, and three months after. This is also when Medigap guaranteed issue is easiest.

  2. October 15 – December 7

    Annual Enrollment (AEP)

Change Advantage plans, join one, return to Original Medicare, or switch Part D. Coverage starts January 1.

  3. January 1 – March 31

    Open Enrollment (OEP)

If you are already in an Advantage plan, you may make one change — to another Advantage plan or back to Original Medicare.

  4. Qualifying life events

    Special Enrollment

Losing employer coverage, moving out of a service area, and certain other events open a short window. Bring the end date. We work backward from it.

What a review actually covers

  • Your doctors — in-network, or any provider who takes Medicare.
  • Your prescriptions against this year’s formularies.
  • Premium, deductible, and likely out-of-pocket for how you use care.
  • Whether employer coverage should stay in place.
  • The exact dates you can enroll, switch, or wait.
